Arnie’s Public House – Akron | Comfort Food

Arnie’s Public House – Akron | Comfort Food

Throw a fancy descriptor on the name of a restaurant and you’re certain to bring in new customers. Case in point – Arnie’s Public House.

Located in the Westgate shopping center across from the old West Point Market and near Swenson’s, Arnie’s used to go by “Arnie’s Standing Room Only”. Sounded… uncomfortable.

Then, two weeks ago E suggested we check out this new “Public House” and I was all for it. It sounded like something new for Akron. Resorting to Google to learn a bit more about it, I found that it was the old SRO. Oh.

Not a prob though, reviewers are happy with the upgrades and the food plus the new Arnie’s accepts weekend reservations.

When we arrived at 6:30 for our double date, the bar area was full and the restaurant was at about 75% capacity. The atmosphere was perfect – ambient lighting and a comfortable noise level – ideal for getting to know our buddy’s new gal.

The beer, wine and cocktail list is well thought out. Cocktails are stiff but won’t knock you on your rear, and the winner at our table was the “Aviation” concocted with Watershed Gin and Creme De Violette. Major bonus points for having Ohio’s own Watershed spirits throughout their menu. A  nice selection of craft beers (both local and national) and boutique wines are also available.

The food is affordable and approachable. Soft pretzels served with beer cheese and apple mustard are only $4, Irish nachos made with homemade potato chips, bacon, cheese sauce and fresh pico de gallo are only $5. The list goes on, whether you’re ordering Hungarian hot peppers or potato croquettes, you won’t shell out more than $10.

If you’re looking to veer from the menu, there is a daily seafood special. I opted for that as soon as I heard “rainbow trout”.  The trout was cooked to perfection which can be quite the feat when a restaurant is busy.

Other mainstay menu options include entrees like fried chicken and waffles, build your own mac + cheese, braised pork shank, ribeye steak, etc. etc. etc. Nothing is priced over $15 aside from the ribeye which is still a reasonable $24.

The other portion of the menu includes a few burgers, tacos, and sandwiches like shaved ribeye, meatloaf and turkey. Prices are $7-$12 and include a side.

Vegetarians will also rejoice in the options like an heirloom tomato salad, eggplant caponata and eggplant sandwich, sweet potato + quinoa tacos, cavatappi prima vera. G-free folks also have a handful of options to choose from.

Lesson learned: keep an eye out for restaurant/bar renovations, they may turn out to be a new place in your rotation.
