Cameo Grill: Great Burger Joint in Massillon
Last weekend we went to a few of Stark County’s “shining stars” – The Twisted Olive, Main Street Grill, even stopped in Oakwood Bistro, however, the best meal wasn’t at any of those listed above. It was at a local dive, right down Rt. 21 in Massillon: Cameo.
The Cameo Grill bleeds orange and black, is modest and really doesn’t care what you think of them, so long as you like the food. If you’re not familiar with the area, Massillon is a football town where “Tiger Pride is City Wide” and the biggest day of the year isn’t Christmas, it’s the Massillon/McKinley high school football game. Most residents are life-long, and the community is close-knit.
Basically, Cameo is a perfect reflection of its hometown.
The walls are covered in wood paneling and tigers memorabilia, the tables aren’t clothed, and the lighting won’t make your date look any better (though the $5 pitcher of beer might). And that’s okay, because their main focus is to sell good-tasting food for an even tastier price.
I’ve also yet to feel any disappointment walking out. Guilt. Yes, definitely guilt, but not disappointment.
The food is absolutely messy, delicious and not for the faint of heart. Salads are found on the menu, but who cares? Fried pickles, fried green peppers, fried hot cheese balls, and mozzarella sticks are way tastier than your typical salad mix.
But really, the burgers are why you should check the place out.
Here’s how the famous burgers work, and pricing:
- Small Cameo Cheeseburger (quarter pound with the works) $2.95 (with bacon $3.95)
- Large Cameo Cheeseburger (half pound with the works) $3.95 (with bacon $5).
- Go nuts with the Original Cameo burger which is two pounds of beef, plus toppings, and a pound of french fries.
- Those “works” I keep mentioning are serious: ketchup, mustard, relish, pickle, “Cameo” pepper and onion.

Also notable are the BLTs and bowls of chili. Both arrive in enormous portions, and are totally great. Other items on the menu include battered fish, chicken wings, patty melts, grilled cheese and foot-long hotdogs.
And for breakfast? All of the favorites: eggs, bacon, sausage, steak, hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy, toast, etc.
Make sure to bring cash because this establishment is cash only. An ATM sits inside the door, but your best bet is to come prepared. Not to mention, a bill for two will generally be under $15, so you’re safe with a twenty in your pocket…pretty sure most people can swing that check.
Here’s another feel-good: 1 burger at The Rail = 2 meals + fries + appetizer at Cameo.
Parking is available on the street and in a side lot. During game days and during the usual weekend busy times, you may have to park a bit further away, but no worries, the neighborhood is safe.
Find them at 809 Erie St S, Massillon, Ohio. Their Facebook page is here, and they’re always running giveaways for gift certificates. If you’re on the hunt for even more burger places to check out in Stark County, check out our Best Burgers in Canton post for even more options.
