Crafty Mart: Akron’s Living Etsy Shop
Browsing Etsy is fun, but it’s usually just that for me, browsing. However, when you put those shops on a table and allow me to pick items up, smell them (promise I’m talking about soaps and body butters… maybe), feel them and get caught up in the excitement, I buy, buy, buy. Perfect business concept! The creators of Crafty Mart just so happen to be savvy, and have smarty pants because they did just that.
If you haven’t heard of Crafty Mart, don’t feel like you live under a rock, we hadn’t until it was a suggested event on Facebook. It’s a “bi-annual Akron, Ohio show of Handcrafted Accoutrement and Attainable Art made by local, independent artisans.” While I haven’t been able to figure out the whole story behind Crafty Mart, I do know it’s held at Musica (aside from Manly Mart), has been around since 2009 and there are a few variations of the shop.
Crafty Mart: School’s Out: This is the one we just shopped.
The Mom & Pop Shoppe: Held in April as the one-stop Mother’s and Father’s day gift buying shop.
Mini Mart: Where less means more, same idea as the others, lots of goodies that you want, need or didn’t know you need until you see them.
Manly Mart: Upcoming shop for dudes. Vintage finds and handmade items for guys, made mostly by guys. There will also be a photo booth, beer and bowling… so naturally Collyn and I are going to this (we self admit that we are dudes at heart). You’ll find Manly Mart this Saturday June 8th from 12 P.M. – 6 P.M. at Mahalls 20 Lanes – 13224 Madison Avenue Lakewood, Ohio.
These guys also put on additional events, such as art shows and galleries throughout the year.
What a truly exciting and inspiring find. The gathering of online shops, local boutiques and independent artisans in one spot is a dream come true for those looking for unique gifts, jewelry, art and something to do.
The vendors come from all around the NEOhio area. Vendors from Tremont brought custom lotion bars, beer bottle candles and hand pressed jewelry while Canton vendors like “13th Floor Gallery” brought awesome, slightly twisted art. Bumbly’s Soapworks displayed soap and body butters that you want to eat. Seriously, it troubles me that I would probably take a bite of the Peanut Butter Chocolate Soap ($5.50).
Prices vary from $3 for 5 vintage keys up to $70 for NEOhio map lockets. In my opinion, the prices are very fair for the products you are buying. Gorgeous leather card holder wallets are $35 and wrist wraps are only $15 from Wright & Rede.
Make it a day when you go to the next Crafty Mart and visit Rubber City Clothing – 330 and blimp clothing, Crave – great appetizers and martinis, Urban Eats – vegan and vegetarian options, Uncorked Wine Bar – wine, obviously, and WE Gallery – local artwork. Each of these Akron spots are within 100 ft of Musica, so you won’t have to move your car when you park for FREE at the High/Market Parking Deck at 40 S High St (aka library parking deck).
Let us know if you’ve been to one of the past Crafty Marts, plan to hit up Manly Mart, or look forward to the next Crafty Mart! If you are attending Manly Mart this Saturday, it’s near the CLE Flea, also being held that day – so make sure to make time for both.
Musica: 51 E Market St. Akron, Ohio.
