The District Boutique in Green, Ohio

The District Boutique in Green, Ohio

We’re always excited to welcome new indie retail to the area, but it’s extra sweet when the co-owner is a good friend. I met District Boutique co-owner Jennifer Geh at my first day on the job way back in 2005, when we were both -ahem- a decade younger and doing the web marketing agency-thing. {Fun fact: a few years later, Lisa came to work there, which is how we met, too. Yay!}

We’ve all since moved on from those days of agency life + jeans and flip flops {I DO miss wearing jeans 5x a week}, but even with our super-casual dress code, Jen always had a fantastic fashion sense that was all her own. I quickly learned that she’s also a perfectionist {in the best possible way}, both in business and life, so when she told me she was opening a boutique I had complete confidence it would be amazing.

Jen and her co-owner/friend Marcie Horbus did NOT disappoint. I watched from the sidelines as they carefully and lovingly paid attention to every detail, from the right branding to merch to space.

Now about that space

The District is located at the new Heritage Crossings plaza on Massillon Road in Green, down a spot or two from the new Acme Fresh Market and next to the soon-to-open Pav’s Creamery {you may recall how I feel about Pav’s <3}. I think it’s a super-smart location; the area is growing, and there’s plenty of complementary stores in the immediate vicinity: Starbuck’s, Kasai Japanese Restaurant, and TOM+CHEE {fancy grilled cheeses}.  They’re also across from our area’s only Market District.

The inside is feminine-industrial-chic. …is that a thing? Metal pipe racks, chunky wood accents and exposed ductwork are softened with pale pink + cream walls and luxe lighting. The effect is pretty, modern and inviting. My favorite piece? Their salvaged-wood wrap counter, custom built by the owners of Rust & Found. Swoon.

About the merch…

Every piece at the District is hand-picked by Jen and Marcie because it’s in some way unique. They travel to cities like Chicago and Vegas to scour retail marts to bring back exclusive brands in an accessible price range. Thank goodness, right?! As a girl who never goes for the basic t-shirt, I love that. That ‘unique something’ could be crochet trim, a fantastic tribal print, unexpected back detail, sequin collar….you get the idea. One of my favorites is their extra-long tank top with a tulle ruffle at the bottom. Seriously, I’ve yet to buy a piece that’s even close to ho-hum.

My finds? A colorful knit scarf, vintage-y pendant necklace that says ‘Lucky Mama’ in a typewriter font {I am one lucky mama}, a pair of ‘miracle’ black leggings {it’s true}, a cream-and-black peplum polka dot blouse for work, funky head wrap, sparkly earrings, and a few things I can’t recall at the moment.

If you’re looking for a special top or sweater to pair with designer denim, The District should be your first stop.  They sell plenty of must-have options, including Level 99 denim, which is off-the-charts awesome. If you’re looking for a great cocktail dress, The District should also top your list. {If you’ve shopped for a special cocktail dress in Akron/Canton you KNOW how frustrating it can be.} Jen and Marcie have a knack for buying dresses that are somehow perfect for ages 16-60. Just the right amount of detail and shine, and since they only order a few of each style, you’ll avoid that embarrassing ‘look-alike’ moment at your next event.

Be sure to  join them every Thursday from 6-8pm for Sip n’ Shop with complimentary champagne while you shop. And in March 2015, Pav’s Creamery’s new sit-down location opens next door, so you can dine-then-shop {or shop-then-dine} any time you like. Also be sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram, where Jen is putting all those years in web marketing to excellent use.
