Labor Day Weekend Goings-On in Northeast Ohio

Labor Day Weekend Goings-On in Northeast Ohio

Lots lots LOTS going on this holiday weekend! Here’s where you’re likely to find Lisa or me over the Labor Day weekend. We have some ambitious goals to hit most, if not all of these, using a divide-and-conquer strategy, hand sanitizer and possibly some Red Bulls. Hope to see you here, here, there & there!

fairStark County Fair
(aka PEOPLE WATCHING GOLD) – now through Sept 2 – CANTON
My boys came home with discount student tickets last week, so I’m kinda feeling like it’s my duty to take them. I do like looking at the farm animals; they’re mostly cute. (FACT: I had no idea county fairs existed until I moved to Ohio, so there’s still some degree of novelty there.) If you like foods-being-fried-that-shouldn’t-be-fried and rickety rides, you’re also good to go.

Mainstream Boutique Grand Opening – Aug 31 – NORTH CANTON
GUYS, I mean, GALS. North Canton is getting an indie fashion boutique – something this area has needed for many long painful years. Their grand opening is this Saturday, August 31, but we’re getting a sneak peak on Friday night! We’ll take lots of pics and be sure to share our favorites on the blog, and be sure to go check it out on Saturday.

Farmers Market Hoppin’ – Aug 31 – EVERYWHERE
This might very well be the peak weekend for summer produce. We suggest checking out Hale Farm (see below) and the farmers’ market at Countryside Conservancy in the same outing; they’re super close to each other. Other fun Saturday farmers markets worth exploring: Wooster, Hudson, and if you’re farther north, North Union in Shaker Square.

Made in Ohio Festival at Hale Farm – Aug 31 – BATH, OH
What’s great about this festival is that every vendor must be the producer (no Tastefully Simple booths, in other words) and their product must be made in Ohio. Hence the name of the festival. :) Looks like a great stop for picking up unique gifts and art. Admission is $5 and includes access to the grounds and buildings at Hale Farm.

Hoppin’ Frog Tasting Room – Aug 31 – AKRON
The Tasting Room at Hoppin’ Frog Brewery in Akron is hosting a pig roast this Saturday at 6 PM. A whole roasted pig paired with craft beer? Um, yeah. Read Lisa’s review of The Tasting Room here.

Fairlawn Food Truck Roundup – Sept 1 – FAIRLAWN/MONTROSE
Where the City of Akron has dropped the ball on the whole food truck issue (trucks are banned from downtown Akron), the City of Fairlawn is stepping up. Woo! This Sunday, Fairlawn Parks & Rec is planning an EPIC park party featuring 20 food trucks, live entertainment, activities for the kiddos, and lots more. It’s all happening from 11 AM-7 PM at Bicentennial Park. Pretty sure this one’s going to be a huge hit.

fairlawnLisa and I are borderline food truck professionals at this point (we all have skills, you guys), and some of our food truck “you gotta try this” items include:

  • Truk Balls (aka arincini or deep friend risotto balls) from the Orange Truk. You may remember us talking about our intense and unwavering love of these in previous posts.
  • Chicken nachos with cilantro lime sour cream and guac sauce from Wholly Frijoles. Just try ‘em, K??
  • Fries with chipotle mayo from Krav. A ‘fan fave’ for good reason!
  • Tots from the Hodge Podge truck. Gotta love a good tot.
  • Sushiritos from Sushi on the Roll – part sushi, part burrito, it’s a sushirito!
  • Korean beef burrito from Umami Moto. I die.
  • Anything from Popsmith. Popsicles in grownup flavors = GENIUS.

Labor Day Hartville Flea Market – Aug 30-Sept 2 (Closed Sun) – HARTVILLE
It’s their 74th annual labor day market, and all that treasure-hunting is VERY tempting. Last time I found my prized deer antlers for a total steal; what will I find this time?!? Wear your walking shoes and leave yourself plenty of time for parking, walking, shopping, traffic back-ups, and getting annoyed at fellow human beings. Along those lines, bring lots of patience – people sell the most ridiculous stuff. No, I don’t want your ratty old shoes from 1982.

Taste of Hudson – Sept 1 & 2HUDSONtaste of hudson
Besides being one of my favorite walkable towns in NE Ohio, Hudson has a fabulous collection of restaurants, and you can sample ‘em this weekend. Flipside Burger Joint, One Red Door, Rosewood Grille, etc, etc – I’m already getting hungry. Also happening: live music and an art fair.

Sooooo, that’s what we’re (attempting) to do this weekend. What about you? Any local spots with Labor Day festivities worth mentioning?

  1. What did I do before I found you on the weekends? Nothing! Thank you for doing the leg work for me and letting me enjoy my weekends! Now, if you could locate a designated driver for me…..

    • Haha, glad we could help! And could you find us a DD, too? ;)
