Melt Bar & Grilled: Now Open in Canton Ohio!
For over a decade, Melt Bar & Grilled has been a popular food stop for Canton folks [“Cantonites” sounds too much “Canaanites”] taking Cleveland day-trips. Here’s the routine: do some shopping, eat at Melt, maybe take in an Indians or Cavs game if you’re lucky, head home happy and full. I suspect the good folks at Melt picked up on this pattern.
We might want to make some itinerary adjustments moving forward, however, because Canton is now home to Melt’s 11th location in Jackson Township at Belden Village Mall. Canton is part of Melt’s expansion plan that includes Columbus and Dayton, as well as specialty locations like Cedar Point and Progressive Field. It may have taken 11 years for Melt to get here, but hey, we’re grateful [and heavier].
I was recently invited to the Canton soft opening [thank you, Melt!]. The hour-plus wait aside [cocktails helped], our table enjoyed great cheese-centric entrees, craft beer, a cool vibe, and attentive service. If you’re looking to have a love affair with lactose, Melt just might be your unicorn.
Now, while we’ve been to Melt on prior occasions [refer to the itinerary above], we were unprepared for the onslaught of dishes brought before us. It took the Melt experience to a level of indulgence that seemed morally impermissible, which was pretty perfectly captured on camera by Lisa.
Apps: Our group of five started with three appetizers: hangover fries, mozzarella wedges and fried pickles. All three were solid picks, but in hindsight the hangover fries were a bit much; each sandwich also came with heaping fries. That said, if you like poutine [fries topped with gravy, pork belly, cheese curds and don’t forget the sunny-side egg] you’ll like these a lot. Table fave: fried pickles, hands-down. These pickle wedges [not pickle chips] are fried to a deep-golden brown, and the pickle-to-batter ratio is just right. They’re served with a remoulade sauce that I could eat with a spoon.
Sandwiches: We tried four sandwiches which were split among the group. We ordered full sandwiches, but halfs are also available. From least to most flavorful:
The Parmageddon: I say pass. Futureman, however, was nursing it for a good ten minutes, and said he would order it again. While pierogis on a sandwich sound interesting, the carb on carb thing was a bit much, even for Melt.
The Monte Cristo: it’s hard to go wrong with a deep-fried ham, turkey and cheese sandwich dusted with powdered sugar and a side of raspberry dipping sauce. But it’s definitely a “split” item – it’s super-rich and a few bites go a long way.
Table fave: the Korean War Pig, hands down. [insert Korea or Trump joke here] Korean BBQ pork, spicy kimchi slaw, cilantro-pear relish, and muenster. It’s got a depth of flavor, contrast and heat that stood out from the others. YUM:
Dessert: Um, yeah. We couldn’t actually move at this point, but bravely soldiered on to try two Melt desserts: mango-coconut bread pudding and fried twinkies. Table fave: by a landslide…mango-coconut bread pudding. It was spectacular, and we all agreed it’s worth saving room for, as difficult as that may be. Save fried twinkies for the fair.
Drinks: Ah, lastly, the bar! I’ve only ordered from the beer menu in the past and definitely missed out. Melt’s signature cocktails are super-fun and tasty. I tried the Island Mule – pineapple-infused vodka, ginger & lime. One of our dining companions tried the Rose Colored Gimlet – gin, grenadine, lime & basil. We’d order both again for sure. Melt has happy hour M-F from 4-7pm with dozens of drinks and snacks affordably priced from $2.00-$7.00.
Décor: As you walk in, there’s a huge mural dedicated to all things Canton. My hubs, who’s a huge vinyl fan, solved a mystery for us: the guy by the words “Checkered Records”? That’s the late George from Checkered Records – the store’s longtime owner.
Now, take that bit of trivia, impress your friends, and go eat at Melt. Just eat about a quarter of what we did…you’ll be glad you did.
