Cocktail Therapy: Moscow Mule Recipes

I first became acquainted with the Moscow Mule – that classic ginger-lime cocktail served in a copper cup – a few years ago, a short time after Anthony Bourdain {love you, Tony!} visited Cleveland to film his TV show No Reservations. One of his stops on an “off night” in Cleveland (i.e., no video shooting that night) was the Velvet Tango Room, a swanky speakeasy in Tremont. He loved it, immediately regretting that the cameras weren’t rolling as he soaked in the throw-back vibe and hand-crafted cocktails. And while I wish the rest of the story was that I also just happened to be there that night, and that he walked in and insisted on buying everyone a round of Moscow Mules, and that we became immediate, inseparable BFFs….it didn’t quite work out that way. At all.

No, I read about his visit to the Velvet Tango Room on a blog  {snooze} and made plans to go with the hubs on one of our CLE date-night excursions. Because when Anthony Bourdain gives his mixology stamp of approval,  and it’s in a town just up the road, you get in your car and go.  So, on the night of my REAL visit, I had my first Moscow Mule – vodka, housemade ginger beer, and fresh-squeezed lime, served over ice in a frosty copper mug. I don’t know if it was the bar’s speakeasy mood, or the novelty of the copper mug, or the perfect combo of sweet, spicy ginger with tart lime, but I was hooked, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Fast forward a few years, and I no longer have to drive an hour to drink a good one. It’s definitely back from the endangered cocktails list. I can find several fun Moscow Mule varieties a few blocks from my house at Table Six Kitchen + Bar. And when I don’t want to go out, I can make my own; I even have the copper mugs to make it legit.

Here are a few takes on a Moscow Mule, from traditional to ‘out-there,’ to keep you mixing all summer long. Be sure sure SURE to buy good ginger beer (Fever Tree is my go-to) and  good vodka. And to make your friends and neighbors extra jealous, buy a pair of these beauts, too.

Traditional
2 oz vodka
4 to 6 oz ginger beer
1 oz lime juice
wedge of lime for garnish

Mix first three ingredients together and serve over ice. Garnish with lime.

Greenhouse Tavern Mule (recreated to the best of our abilities!)
2 oz locally-distilled vodka
4 to 6 oz ginger beer
1 oz lime juice
1 oz Dewar’s White Label Whiskey
a few drops of Angostura bitters
wedge of lime for garnish

Mix first four ingredients together and serve over ice. Top with bitters and garnish with lime.

Blueberry Mule (my new warm-weather fave)
2 oz vodka (plain or blueberry – you can also make your own blueberry-infused vodka)
4 to 6 oz ginger beer
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 -2 oz blueberry simple syrup

Blueberry simple syrup: combine 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup water, and a handful of fresh blueberries in a saucepan. Bring to a low boil until sugar dissolves and blueberries “burst.” Muddle the blueberries into the syrup, then strain. Keep syrup in the fridge for several days.

Blood Orange Mule
2 oz fresh blood orange juice
2 oz vodka
4 to 6 oz ginger beer
1 oz fresh lime juice

Mix first four ingredients together and serve over ice.

Strawberry Mint Mule
2 oz strawberry-infused vodka (combine strawberries & vodka and let sit for 24 hours at room temp, then strain)
4 to 6 oz ginger beer
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz agave or simple syrup (equal parts sugar + water, dissolved)
Several fresh mint leaves

Muddle the mint leaves with the agave/simple syrup and lime juice. Add vodka and ginger beer and serve over ice.

  2. I have just recently been introduced to the wonder that is the Moscow Mule. It is quickly becoming my favorite non-bourbon alcoholic beverage.

  3. If you want to add a little “extra”, Primo’s Deli sells Crabbies alcoholic Ginger Beer. Although I like Fever Tree better!

    • Hi Jess, I’ve found it at World Market, some Fisher’s locations (44th and North Canton), and some Giant Eagles (Green/Market District and Washington Square). It’s frequently out of stock, so it can be tricky to track down. Just giving you a heads up!
