Pav’s Creamery in Akron: An Ice Cream Cult Classic

A few weeks ago, the discovery of Pav’s Creamery in Portage Lakes threw a curveball to my carefully curated lineup of Canton ice cream favorites. I was all set, really: there’s Milk & Honey {a Canton classic, and what they do, they do SO well}, Handel’s {a million flavors, including the out-of-this-world ‘Red Skies at Night’ – black raspberry with chocolate chunks}, and Almost Heaven {their house specialty is killer homemade butter pecan}.


I should mention that Pav’s corner stand clocks in at a solid 20-25 minute drive from home. That’s a long way for a cold scoop. In fact, it’s totally the other way of anywhere I go, ever; one must navigate two-lane roads and around a bend-y lake to get there.

Yet, my family can’t stop talking about it. Nor can anyone else who discovers this Akron cult classic.

Thanks to social media {Instagram in particular} I became acquainted with Pav’s through some IG foodie friends who felt it necessary to tempt me via their iPhone food photos. Something I would NEVER do. ;) Funny, Pav’s has been around since 1969, doing just fine, I’d imagine, before social media nerds like me came along. But here we are.


They’re known mostly for their weekly flavors of custard, but also feature hand-dipped ice cream (my choice, almost always) in artisan flavors like Fig+Orange, Mexican Chocolate, and Nutella S’mores. While those were awfully tempting to ME, the kids went mainstream, ordering Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Chocolate Covered Strawberry. Both were exceptional {I snuck bites, naturally}, but the Chocolate Covered Strawberry was truly something to behold: intense homemade strawberry ice cream criss-crossed with pieces of chocolate shell. Chocolate pieces literally protruding an inch or more in places! My son was in heaven.




Futureman and I went all out and shared one of the most ridiculous foods on the planet. Feast your eyes upon the chocolate-dipped glazed-donut sandwich with a Nutella ice cream center. Let this sink in for a moment:


It was as over-the-top as you might imagine, and I only made it a few bites in. Honestly? The Nutella ice cream didn’t need a donut, much less one dipped in chocolate. It was plenty amazing on its own, and a cup or a cone would have done just fine.

On the drive home, it dawned on us that we probably won’t get to Pav’s as often as we’d like. Not when we live in North Canton. Later this year, however, they plan to open a second location in the new Heritage Crossings plaza in Green; a fancier place that’s rumored to have desserts and wine, and I’m sure their signature creamery items. That’s also a lot closer to home, and more dangerous for frequent visits.

Until then, I’m sure we’ll come up with a reason or two to make the voyage to the original Pav’s. Their custard and gelato and West Side Bakery ice cream sandwich are begging to be sampled.

  1. We discovered Pav’s a few years ago. What a deadly discovery! Anytime we’re near Akron in the summer we have to stop. Planning a post-church trip there tomorrow. :)

    • I just saw that they have food trucks on select nights this summer, too. Double win!

  2. The sister of the owner of Pav’s has an ice cream shop downtown Canal Fulton. Its the same custard & so on as Pav’s. The Tow Path runs right along the shops parking lot–very easy to grab a cone & be on your way.
