Holiday Eats+Sweets: Simply Delicious Pies in Cleveland
I’ve been meaning to write this post since April. It is now November, for those of you, like me, who occasionally need reminded of the month and maybe the season.
However, I think my procrastination is working out for the blogging best here, because we are now SMACK into peak pie season. It also means I’ve been able to sample several other pies since the first few I tried this spring, allowing me to share a plenitude of pie-eating experiences. (I believe our family’s up to seven pies total.)
So yeah, I just totally justified that.
Earlier this year, I began following an adorable Shaker Heights-based pie shop on Twitter called Simply Delicious Pies (@deliciouspies). Given my love for a humble slice o’ pie, I was thrilled to discover a dedicated pie shop in Northeast Ohio owned by two sisters. (I will spare you my missive on the topic, but pie is the ultimate in nostalgic, wholesome goodness. And cakes – ugh, they can be so fussy and dry!) Even better, one of the two sisters/co-owners, Beth, lives in Canton and has delivered pies to me on TWO separate occasions. Talk about amazing customer service.
It’s pretty obvious if you follow Simply Delicious pies on Facebook or Twitter that you’re in for a treat. Sister Brittany is a trained chef, and everything is baked fresh daily from scratch, with local ingredients when possible. Details like preservative-free freshly whipped cream and slow roasted caramel are just a few of their special touches. They offer a wide variety of both sweet and savory pies, and I’m happy to report I’ve had at least one from each category: fruit, cream, seasonal, specialty, and savory.
My hands-down fave: Caramel Apple pie. I thought my own caramel apple pie was the bomb….until I had theirs. Womp womp. The key, I think, is their slow-cooked caramel and flaky crust. If you’re not sure where to start, I suggest this one because the little pools of caramel will NOT disappoint.
Seasonal fave: Key Lime pie. I’m a total sucker for key lime pie, and this was among the best I’ve had. It was a perfect mix of tart lime and sweet creaminess, with an INSANE thick graham cracker crust. So good, and perfect for warmer months.
Futureman’s pick: The hubs is partial to the Turtle Cream pie. He’s a chocolate love-ah, and with this pie, you get a semi-sweet chocolate cream filling, chocolate cookie crust, plus that amazing fresh whipped cream, slow cooked caramel, and pecans. I have to admit, this one really grew on me with each bite!
If you’re in the mood for something savory, try their Chicken Pot pie. It made a fun, easy and delicious dinner when paired with a salad, and was GONE in a flash. The double crust was a hit with the whole fam.
As tends to be the case with places like this, Simply Delicious Pies is now my non-secret secret. They were just featured on New Day Cleveland, were a 2013 Cleveland Hot List winner for Best Desserts, and Chef Sawyer from Greenhouse Tavern even got a “birthday pie” from their shop.
This holiday season, be sure to get a pie or two from Simply Delicious Pies. You’ll love ‘em, I guarantee it, and you’ll be supporting a fantastic local biz.
