Mad Men-Era Finds at The Retro Ward – Navarre, Ohio

Mad Men-Era Finds at The Retro Ward – Navarre, Ohio

Taking a wild guess here: the village of Navarre, Ohio, wouldn’t be your first stop on the hunt for authentic, funky, retro home wares. But as I’ve discovered time and again on this blog, Northeast Ohio is full of little surprises.

Enter the Retro Ward, a vintage home goods shop in the heart of historic Navarre {awfully close to Amish Country}, serving up anything but the area’s usual wicker baskets and wood carvings. The town of Navarre, 20 minutes west of Canton, is on one of several popular routes to Ohio’s Amish Country, and I imagine that most people simply drive through to touristy towns further south.

But if you like to infuse your home with pops of ’50s, ’60s and ’70s ‘Mad Men’ finds as I do, you should definitely pull the car over for a bit and check out the Retro Ward.

As soon as I walked in, I spotted a display of Don Draper-approved bar ware: an assortment of cocktail shakers and glasses that had me craving a Sidecar at 3 o’ clock in the afternoon. {I have no idea *what* is in a Sidecar, but I feel like I should like it.} Naturally, one of these shakers had to come home with me; you never know when an unforeseen cocktail emergency might arise. Best to be prepared!

A little further back in the store, in the kitchen goods ‘vignette,’ I found my pièce de résistance: a set of four, mint-condition, black-and-gold Pro Football Hall of Fame highball glasses from the 1960s. Given my day job as a marketer of {among other things} Hall of Fame Enshrinement festivities, there was no way I could NOT take these home with me. They’re awesome, and I plan to hold on to them…forever and ever, amen. While I’m not a collector {of anything really}, I love picking up items that tell chapters of my family’s ‘story’ in small, unique and fun ways. Plus, I knew they would make my co-workers terribly jealous. :)

If cocktails a la Don Draper or Pro Football is not your thing, there are also retro-chic light fixtures, 45-speed records, bright mixing bowls, formica tables, and more. Upstairs are all sorts of random finds, including a collection of vintage coats and furs that you could find in Margot Tennenbaum’s closet. It’s too bad I can only pull off that look on Halloween.

Just when I had fully explored two floors of treasures and was content to check out, the owner informed me that there was a separate basement chock-full of larger pieces (!!!!!). Me, cooly: “Oh really? I’ll have to check that out.”

In what could best be described as a cellar, dungeon, or tornado safe-zone, was a hodge-podge of chairs, furniture, and random small and large accent items. My eye immediately went to a stack of three industrial carts that were just right for coffee tables. You can find similar fancied-up versions at Restoration Hardware for ALL THE DOLLARS, but the Retro Ward’s version was just $75 and begging to be given a new life…by me.

Other funky ‘dungeon’ finds included bright accent chairs, side tables, wire-form pendant lamps, and a hanging lamp shade made of jar lids – salsa, pickles, etc. I’m guessing that last one’s not authentically 1950s.

Besides the great prices at the Retro Ward {my bill for the four glasses plus cocktail shaker was under $20}, Navarre offers other fun shops – an antique flea market, coffee shop, upscale 2nd-hand clothing store, as well as an art festival in the fall. And of course, it’s home to Mid’s, which has nothing to do with anything, except that Mid’s is my favorite lazy-night jarred pasta sauce, and you should try it if you haven’t already.

As usual, I digress. But seriously, get to the Retro Ward for your next ’60s-chic find. Now, if Don Draper could actually *be there* when I shop….:)
